The licence, in plain words

Gantry is released under the Functional Source License, version 1.1, with Apache 2.0 as the future licence. Here is what that means for you.

This page explains; it is not the licence. The binding text is LICENSE.md in the repository, and the FSL itself is published by fsl.software.

What you can do

  • Use it, at home or at work, for anything, including commercial work.
  • Read and study the source, and build it yourself.
  • Modify it: fix bugs, add features, change what you like, and share your changes.
  • Redistribute it, with or without your changes, as long as the licence and notices travel with it.

The one thing it reserves

The FSL reserves competing use: offering Gantry, or something made from it, as a product or service that competes with Gantry. Everything else the licence calls a "permitted purpose". Using Gantry to build your own unrelated software, running it for your company, or writing connectors for it is all fine.

Two years later, Apache 2.0

Each version of Gantry converts to the Apache License 2.0 two years after it was released. From then on that version carries no competing-use restriction at all. This is the "ALv2" in FSL-1.1-ALv2.

Why this licence

It keeps the code open to read, run and change from day one, while giving a very small project a fair window before someone else can sell it as their own. The conversion date makes the openness a promise rather than a mood.

Third-party marks and software

Connector names and logos belong to their owners and are shown to indicate compatibility, not endorsement. Gantry itself is built on open-source software with its own licences, listed in the repository's notices.
